One Soul Now

Cowboy Junkies' latest album One Soul Now is one of the first I bought, and certainly the first I listened to. This album absolutely kills me. The whole album just moves along from start to finish, and covers a range of the musical landscape: from poppier songs like Stars Of Our Stars and No Long Journey Home to slow, dark, bluesy songs like Notes Falling Slow and He Will Call You Baby.

On many of the songs it sounds like Michael Timmins has opted for a dirtier guitar sound than on other albums - it works really well, particularly on the moodier songs. He's also written some classic songs again. However, I get the feeling that without Margo Timmins' vocals this band wouldn't be anywhere near as interesting. She's a long way from being a typical rock singer - there's no screaming voice like a jet engine here. Margo sings every song. The rockier songs come across as being a little bit restrained, which ends up being a feature rather than a problem. On the slower songs she's out the front of the band, infusing melody with emotion.

This is one of my favourite albums...
